Zhytomyr, also Zhitomir, city, capital of Zhytomyr Oblast, northern Ukraine, on the Teterev River. Located in an agricultural region, Zhytomyr is a transportation center and a market for lumber and grain. Manufactures include furniture and linen. An agricultural institute is located in the city. Zhytomyr was founded as early as the 9th century. It passed to Lithuania in 1320, to Poland in 1569, and to Russia in 1793. Population (1998 estimate) 298,000.
