Moscow is one of the biggest and most beautiful cities of Europe with more than 850-years history. "The Heart of Russia", that's how Russians call their capital, is a unique combination of unforgettable features of an old Russian city and a modern European character. It's a city with a rapidly increasing population of 11.2 million (2004). It is located on the river Moskva.
It is in the district called Central Russia (which is actually in the extreme west of Russia). It was the capital of the former Soviet Union, and of Muscovy, the pre-Imperial Russia. It is the site of the famous Kremlin, with its elegant onion domes, which serves as the center of the national government.
Moscow is also well known as the site of the Saint Basil's Cathedral. The Patriarch of Moscow serves as the head of the Russian Orthodox Church.
Moscow is one of the largest cultural centres in the world. There are 101 theatres and concert halls, 24 museums, 431 libraries, 81 movie theater and 16 leisure parks in Moscow.
